The Cagefight Comedy Show

Our comedy club is in Newtown, in Sydney's inner west. It features some of Sydney's best improv comedy. Unlike stand up comedy, improv involves making everything up on the spot.

Our comedy club features Sydney’s only weekly show that’s dedicated to improv. We have run over 100 shows, with every show in a battle format!

Improv you say? Yeah IMPROV we say!

In this show YOU - the audience - get to direct the comedy. You’ll be shouting at the comedians, giving them direction about what jokes to make on stage.

You’ll then vote for your favourite comedians. The audience’s favourites will perform a second time on the night.

And the top pick by the audience will win the CAGEFIGHT PRIZE.

This is Sydney’s most democratic comedy show. They even have a democracy sausage on the menu…

How improv shows work

At each comedy show, audience members will shout suggestions to the comedians, who then use it as the inspiration for their jokes. This is a Sydney comedy show unlike all the others!

Each team of comedians will ask the audience for a tonne of info and then send it up on stage.

It’s like watching snippets of ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ blended with ‘The Office’ and mixed ‘Thank God You’re Here’.

If things get really wild, the comedians will ask for volunteers to get up on stage and help them. Relax, it’s for the brave only!

If you’ve got a funny story to tell during the show, we want to hear it - and we will jazz it up with humour and on-stage antics.

You never know what’s going to happen at the Cagefight. And half the fun is watching the comedians - will they soar or will they sink?

The comedians that entertain you the most will be rewarded by performing a second time! You get to vote for your favourites.

Oh and did we mention there’s an improv class before the show?!

Improv class before the show

There is an improv class before each show that is aimed at helping attendees to meet new people, improve their public speaking skills, and gain better story telling abilities.

Want an experience that is truly awesome! Come along for to our improv comedy class and show combo deal. Starting at 6pm, this is perfect for dates, mates, travellers, solo punters and everyone in between.

What is improv comedy? Well, it’s kind of similar to improv theatre. Except with our improvisation, we cut out all the theatrical elements - and we focus instead on comedy!

The idea behind the class is to get everyone laughing and also to increase your charisma when telling stories or your presence when public speaking.

Sound good? Then come along! It’s only a few extra dollars. Class is at 6pm. Wraps up at 7pm. Most people get food and drinks. And then the show is then at 7:30pm.

I want to be in the show

Often people ask us whether they can perform in the show. Our show is similar to a stand up comedy open mic night, but you will need to get in touch with us a few weeks before the show begins if you'd like to perform.

Every week people ask us how they can join the show!

Well there are two ways, you can always come along and participate by shouting ideas at the comedians and - when possible - volunteering to come on stage to be part of the mayhem.

The other way is to sign up as a team. If you have more than six months of improv theatre, acting or theatresports experience, then join our Facebook group for performers.

If you are less experienced, why don’t you start coming to our improv classes? If it’s your first time, grab the combo deal and combine it with our show. You’ll learn the ins and outs of improvised comedy, plus you’ll likely meet some other people who are interested in performing in the show.

We have a tonne of people who join the show each year - our show is the only one in Sydney that anyone can join if they have improvisation experience. It’s the closest thing to open mic for improvisers.

The Cagefight began with one of Sydney’s biggest comedy battles.

Every six months, the show features even more comedians than usual.

They battle for two months, with the winners going immediately to the grand finals - which are in the Sydney Comedy Festival and the Sydney Fringe Festival.
